Wuthering Heights A New Gothic Wuthering Heights is considered one of the greatest Gothic novels written by Emily Bronte, the only novel published under the name Ellis Bell. It is a tragic love story that presents the consuming passion between Heathcliff and Catherine. These two characters live under the pressures of social class and gender inequality. One of the classic features of Gothic literature is the supernatural. Bronte succeeds in combing the Gothic elements with romantic themes and horror and supernatural sense to involve the readers to use their imagination and stimulate their senses within the story. It is an atmosphere of isolation, imprisonment, violence, and revenge. Mr. Lockwood gives his exclamation on the first page of the novel that he says, â€Å"In all England, I do not believe that I could have fixed on a situation completely removed from the stir society†(3). In addition, Mr. Lockwood expresses his fear of travelling the moors in a stormy and wild weather. The shift of the weather in the moorland suggests the occurrence of a serious and dangerous disaster. For example, a second violent storm occurs when Heathcliff departs from Wuthering Heights. Bronte states that the weather â€Å" was a very dark evening for summer: the clouds appeared inclined to thunder, and I said we had better all sit down; the approaching rain would be certain to bring him home without further trouble...† and that the â€Å"storm came rattling over the Heights in full fury†(54). The surrounding environment and stormy weather create a truly Gothic setting.
